Hollywood Meets Sioux Falls

Bookmark and Share

Bringing independent films to Sioux Falls has been one woman’s mission. Now, after a lot of hard work her dream has come true. On Sunday her company, Cinema Falls, gave movie and music lovers alike a very special treat all the way from Hollywood.

The film showing is called ‘20 Feet From Stardom.’  It’s a documentary that tells the story of backup singers whose voices were heard with artists from Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson.

Julie Anderson Friesen, Founder of Cinema Falls said, "Cinema Falls was ultimately born out of a love for Independent Films and World Cinema.”
Independent Films and World Cinema aren't exactly easy to come by in Sioux Falls. So in February of 2012, Anderson Friesen founded Cinema Falls. Since then, for just $11.50, hundreds have been able to see films from around the world from the comfort of Icon Lounge.
"People only get an opportunity to see two independent films or two foreign films in a course of a month, so you really want to bring in those films that are trending nationally," Anderson Friesen said.

And trending is exactly Sunday's film is doing.
"I've been looking to show films from the Weinstein Company, but it's been a difficult connection to make," Anderson Friesen said.

The Weinstein Company is a film company based out of New York. Behind the name are films like 'Derailed', 'Transamerica', and most recently, the documentary '20 Feet From Stardom'.

"It's (about) the unsung heroes of the people that made the music we know so well in our time," Anderson Friesen explained.

For Anderson Friesen, showing a film that is under such a big name is a huge milestone, not only for her, but for the community. She said being from smaller city that typically doesn't host red carpet events; it’s hard to get big companies who are willing to share their films on a smaller screen.
As the crowed rolled in, you could tell they too were excited to have a little bit of Hollywood in Sioux Falls.

Patrick Miller, a season pass holder for Cinema Falls said," Where Julie really excels is being able to provide us something that we normally wouldn't be able to see at all."

Abbie Johnson, Icon Lounge Special Events Manager said, “It's a lot of fun to have a diverse artistic crowd down here to be a part of this really exciting opportunity."
Now that it's showing, it's time to keep the film, where ever it may come from, rolling.

“The driver is no different from when you've been at a really great restaurant and you've had the most delicious meal and it felt like a feast. And then the first thing you want to do is go grab your friends and share it with them," Anderson Friesen said.

The next big event for Cinema Falls will be the Oscar Nominated Shorts. The date for when that will take place will be released soon.

You can more information on Cinema Falls on their website and Facebook page.
