Yoga Teacher Certification Comes To Aberdeen

Aberdeen, SD might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of the trendy exercise of hot yoga.

"We started doing hot yoga here in July which is kind of ironic because it was 104 degrees outside, and we were trying to get people to come in here where it's 104 degrees," said Candace Briscoe, owner of Profiling Beauty and Lean Body Barre.

Similar to traditional yoga, hot yoga is said to have relaxing and strenghtening benefits. The only twist is that it's practiced in a room set at at least 104 degrees fareinheit.

In just a few short months, Candace Briscoe's hot yoga studio, Lean Body Barre has come a long way.

"I'm amazed at what it's come to in such a short amount of time. It's just all these small things working together," said Candace.

Now, the studio is on the brink of a major development, by bringing yoga instructor certification to Aberdeen.

"If you want to get training to be a teacher, nine times out of ten you've got to fly to Denver, or Miami, or San Diego," said Candace.

Hopefully, that won't be the case anymore. Chris Schwan, an instructor with more than ten years of experience, is traveling from Phoenix, AZ to the midwest to give South Dakotans a rare opportunity.

"If this goes well we're going to have her come back every couple of months and do an intense weekend training," said Candace.

That means students could become certified in about a year, without traveling hundreds of miles. But die hard "yogis" aren't the only people Candace thinks the new program will bring in.

"We've got high school students, and we've got a regular that's 72-years-old that comes every Monday," said Candace.

Candace says having this opportunity in the rural midwest is unique.

"What's really neat is it kind of ups what we can offer people as far as yoga is concerned," said Candace.

And when asked if she really thinks people will come to Aberdeen for this opportunity, there's no doubt in her mind.

"Oh yeah, we've alreayd had a lot of excitement about it definitely. We can actually offer things that I never even dreamed that we could actually offer here," said Candace.

Things that some big cities might be used to, but make a big impression on a midwest town.
