Northwestern Upsets #1 Morningside!

Bookmark and Share

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  -  No. 19 Northwestern raced out to a 28-7 halftime lead and held off a late charge from Morningside, upsetting the No. 1 Mustangs 38-28 Saturday afternoon in Orange City.

Theo Bartman led the way for the Red Raiders, carrying 33 times for 123 and four scores.

After a one yard touchdown by Brandon Wegher to put Morningside up 7-0 midway through the first, Northwestern answered back with 28-unanswered points.

Bartman answered, scoring from nine yards out to tie the game up at 7.

The senior back found paydirt in the second, this time from seven yards out to put Northwestern out front 14-7.

The next three series were turnover prone for both squads.  After a Morningside turnover, Northwestern gave it right back before a third straight interception was turned into points by the Red Raiders.

Davis Bloemendaal scored on a five yard run with three minutes to play first half to open up a 21-7 lead over the top ranked Mustangs.

The Red Raiders would get the ball back and marched right down the field to the end, highlighted by Bartman's third score of the half to give Northwestern a 28-7 lead at the break.

Morningside pulled within 28-21 at the end of the third quarter, but the comeback would fall short.
