Hundreds Of Turkeys Given Away

Bookmark and Share

With Thanksgiving less than three weeks away, around 170 volunteers with the Ransom Church in Sioux Falls bundled up this morning to shed a little holiday cheer.

With baking instructions and turkeys in hand, volunteers with the Ransom Church in went door to door in Sioux Falls neighborhoods.

"We had stories of people that just lost their jobs and they weren't going to have a turkey this year," said volunteer Audra Eide.

They're delivering turkeys to those that may not have one for the holidays, but the message goes far deeper than that.

"There's really nothing better to do with your time than to just put a smile on someone's face," said Eide.

The first year, the church volunteers gave away around 300 turkeys. Now in its third year, the church says they are recognizing a stronger need and distributed 11,000 turkeys.

"We certainly see the need in the community and as a church we like to do a couple of things. We would {like to get rid of} poverty, bless the community and school districts around here," said Pastor Wayne Doiron.

The church delivers the food in both the Sioux Falls and Harrisburg communities. They are working closely in the neighborhood surrounding Axtell Park, Hawthorne and Whittier schools.

"It's so great you catch people off guard and they come to the door and they have no idea what you're doing,” said Eide.

A simple deed that's just as rewarding for the volunteers, as it is for those who are receiving their holiday gift.

"Now someone can sit down together with other family members, and share the turkey and the love that was brought to their door," said Eide.

Each turkey the church delivered was 10 pounds. The church says they also offered a drop off location for people to come and pick them up.
