Mitchell Has Seventh Sex Crime This Month

Bookmark and Share

Seven people have been arrested in Mitchell this month for sex-related crimes against minors. Three of those cases involve adult men having sexual contact with children under the age of 10.

The seventh sex-related crime was reported Thursday night. A man contacted law enforcement at around 5:30 p.m. saying he had knowledge about a sex crime against a child. It’s a tip that led law enforcement to an arrest.

A Mitchell man is now behind bars for allegedly sexually abusing a 4-year old boy.

"We investigated and as a result we arrested a 22-year old man for engaging in sex acts with a 4-year old child who was in his care," said Mitchell Police Department Lt. Don Everson.

A tip led Mitchell Police to a resident on Oakmond Avenue in Mitchell. Lt. Don Everson says Casey Girard was later arrested on one count of 1st Degree Rape, which is a Class C Felony.

"He just admitted to this one victim but there could be others as well,” said Everson.

Everson says the abuse against the 4 year-old boy had been happening for months.

"There were several sex acts that happened between this 22 year-old and this 4 year-old. The 22 year-old even gave us information about his sexual preference and (preferred) age range. His range was for this particular range in children," said Everson.

Everson says the child was in Girard's care numerous times, but he did not comment the relationship between the two.

"Most people think that the stranger will victimize your children, but the chances are much greater if someone has access or familiarity with your child,” said Everson.

It’s something Police say is important to remember.

"Be careful who you put your children in care of. If you notice activity, contact law enforcement immediately,” said Everson.

Lt. Everson says the 1st Degree Rape Charge brings a maximum penalty of life in prison and $50,000 fine. Girard’s court appearance is set for later this month. Everson says he could face even more charges.

Everson says that sometimes these crimes are reported in streaks, but it’s usual to have three cases in one month where adult men have had sexual contact with children under the age of 10.
