JACKRABBIT STATE: SDSU Defeats USD

Bookmark and Share

VERMILLION, S.D. --  Bragging rights for college football in South Dakota once again reside in Brookings.  In a tight game throughout, South Dakota State prevailed over rival South Dakota 27-12 at the Dakota Dome on Saturday afternoon in Vermillion.

SDSU never trailed in the game but seldom had room to breathe.  Up 13-6 at half, USD pulled to within one in the third quarter on a touchdown from Kevin Earl to Terrance Terry.  A missed extra point kept the Coyotes from tying, and SDSU still led 13-12 heading to the fourth quarter.

Austin Sumner's second touchdown pass to Jason Schneider put SDSU up 20-12 early in the fourth.  USD had multiple chances to tie the game, turning the ball over on downs twice in the fourth.  With less than three minutes left SDSU's Zach Zenner fumbled to give USD the ball inside the Jackrabbit 30.  On the next play Earl sailed a pass that was picked off by Winston Wright and returned 80 yards for the back breaking score.
