Bookmark and Share

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Hayley McCarron's first collegiate game might not be one she remembers, but for the freshman, her second game is one she will never forget.  McCarron notched her first career double-double in a 75-65 win over William Penn.  The victory improves the Vikings' record to 2-0.  The Statesmen's record (3-4) remains unchanged, as this was an exhibition game for them.

McCarron led the way for the Augustana with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting.  The Sioux Fall, S.D. native made some key baskets late in the game, and pulled down some big boards in helping secure the win for the Vikings.

The Vikings opened up the game with some solid shooting, taking an early 10-5 lead against William Penn.  McCarron made an impact early, scoring four quick points for Augustana, helping set the tone early for the Vikings.

Augustana's defense began to lockdown the Statesmen, holding them to just four makes in their first 20 field-goals attempted.

The Vikings began to separate midway in the first half, going on a 19-5 run as a result of being able to get easy transition points and hot outside shooting.  Augustana was able to push the pace and outscore William Penn 8-0 in fast-break points in the first half.  The Vikings' Emily Schulte and Alex Kneeland really got it going, hitting five out of eight three pointers (62.5%).

The Vikings showed lots of unselfish play in the first half, dishing out nine assists by halftime.

William Penn would find a way to close out the half strong, going on an 11-2 run to go into the break only trailing 45-32.

Schulte lead the way again for the Vikings in the half, scoring 13 points and getting three assists.  Nicole Kerkhoff proved to be a force on the glass for Augustana in the first 20 minutes, grabbing a career-high six rebounds by halftime.

The second half got underway with the Statesmen coming out and playing much more aggressive.  William Penn was able to get several baskets in the paint early in the half, causing the Vikings to get into some foul trouble early.

Janay Pritchett took on the scoring load in for Statesmen early in the second half.  Pritchett had eight of William Penn's first 15 points of the half.

Pritchett's aggressive style set the way for the Statesmen to fight their way back into the game late, going on a 7-0 run in just under a minute at the 6:21 mark, cutting Augustana's lead to 66-56 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game.

The Vikings though were able to withstand the storm, thanks to some strong final minutes by McCarron, winning 75-65.

For Augustana, Rhianna Gullickson had a career-high 10 rebounds on the night.

Schulte continued to show off her versatility, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Kneeland knocked down 3-of-5 three pointers on the evening, en route to a career-high nine points.

Up next for the Vikings is Presentation College on Thursday.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
