#5 Stanford Handles SDSU

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – Preseason Associated Press All-American Chiney Ogwumike recorded game-highs of 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 5 Stanford (7-1) to a 80-60 win over South Dakota State (4-3) Thursday at the Puerto Vallarta Hardwood Tournament of Hope.

 

Jackrabbits were led by junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Junior forward Megan Stuart (Roseville, Minn.) added 11 points.

 

Trailing 40-19 at halftime, Stanford scored the first seven points to take a 47-19 lead, but South Dakota State got five-straight points from Waytashek, three-pointers from senior Tara Heiser (Watertown) and Stuart to cut the Cardinal lead to 21 points, 51-30. The Jacks cut the lead to 18 points, 55-37, at the 10:51 mark when freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) hit a trey. The Cardinal responded with a 21-7 run to take a 76-45 lead with 5:01 left. The Jacks outscored Stanford 15-4 for the remainder of the game.

South Dakota State shot 65 percent from the field in the second half after shooting only 25 percent in the first stanza. For the game, the Jacks were 21 of 52 for 40.4 percent from the floor.

 

Stanford shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half and finished shooting 48.4 percent for the game. The Cardinal dominated inside, scoring 24 points in the paint and outrebounding SDSU, 41-28.

 

Stanford used a 10-0 run to take control, leading 18-10 midway through the first half. Ogwumike fueled the 10-0 run with seven points.

 

SDSU got four points from senior Steph Paluch (Pierre) and two from junior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) to pull within seven points, 23-16, with 8:29 left, but the Cardinal scored the next 15 points and held the Jacks scoreless until junior Rachel Walters (Sioux Falls) hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left.

 

South Dakota State plays its final game of the tournament when it plays Florida Gulf Coast Friday at 1 p.m.
