Busiest Delivery Day In UPS History

Bookmark and Share

On Monday UPS workers picked up more than 30 million packages nationwide for the busiest pickup day of the year. They worked just as hard on Tues. Dec. 17, to make sure those packages made it to their destinations on time.

Eric Villanueva has been delivering packages for nearly 20 years. But he says he's never seen anything like this.

"Normally I run about 140, but I still have about 50 stops left in the truck after 5:00 p.m." said Villanueva.

That's only half of what some UPS drivers will do on the busiest delivery day of the year.

"This is the busiest day in the history of UPS. We've been in business for 100 years. Today we will deliver 29 million packages nationwide," said UPS Engineering Supervisor, Jason Bouwman.

That's 300 packages every second, for 24 hours nationwide.

"They started in the morning a little after 8:00 a.m. They go out on route, they'll deliver their packages. Some of them will be back by 5:00 of 6:00, and some of them will be in around 8:00 p.m. tonight," said Bouwman.

Drivers in Sioux Falls have about 20 thousand packages to deliver. An order that takes some extra planning.

Driver's routes have been condensed, and more have been added to make sure all the additional packages can get dropped off on time.

Villanueva says after 20 years, he's noticed some changes in people's orders.

"A lot of customers are doing a lot on the internet," said Villanueva.

Which means more packages, and more stops.

"There's so many packages we only have so many vehicles. So to make them all fit we rent vans from Budget and UHaul to make sure we can get everything delivered on time," said Bouwman.

Delivering millions of packages could present millions of problems. But Sioux Falls workers say they'll keep going until the job is done.

"Nationwide there's always an exception somewhere. In Sioux Falls we plan to have everything delivered," said Bouwman.
