A Watertown man cleared of charges that he killed his ex-girlfriend's toddler has pleaded guilty to two other charges so he doesn't have to stand trial again.
26-year-old Jay Barse pleaded guilty Wednesday to child abuse involving a victim younger than 7 and possessing the prescription drug oxycodone. Prosecutors dropped two other charges. Barse faces up to 25 years in prison when he's sentenced Feb. 19.
A jury acquitted Barse Nov. 4 of murder and manslaughter in the March death of 14-month-old Serenity Seaboy.
Jurors watched a videotaped police interview during which Barse acknowledged hitting the girl in the head four days before she went to the hospital in a separate incident from the allegation in the trial.
