More than 6,000 runners and walkers came together Saturday morning for a common goal: to enhance breast cancer care across the Sioux Empire.
The 26th Annual Avera Race Against Breast Cancer was held near the Avera McKennan Fitness Center in Sioux Falls. Survivors and advocates showed their support for the cause in teams and as individuals. The participants were able to choose from a 5k or 10k run, as well as a 3 mile and 1.5 mile walk.
While some were celebrating being the first to cross the finish line, survivor Kaite Kerkvliet says she's celebrating just being there.
'It's amazing just to know that they have gone through these same types of things that I have, and to know that we're all here together and we're all ready to fight," said Kerkvliet.
This year's race raised more than $375,000. All proceeds will go toward helping other breast cancer patients in the area.
