The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has plans to add a minor in petroleum systems.
President Heather Wilson says the energy industry is growing in the region and many of the school's graduates work in that industry.
The Rapid City school would bring a new faculty member to support the program.
The Board of Regents must give approval to the plan and is expected to do so this week.
Students could begin the minor as early as this fall. It's an 18-credit program with some new courses.
Coursework includes drilling and production engineering and fluid mechanics.
The school is also developing a graduate certificate in petroleum systems open to graduate students and professionals.
