Heavy rain in southeast South Dakota has led to problems in the Sioux Falls area.
Effective immediately, 57th street will be closed between Sycamore Avenue and SD Highway 11. Eastbound traffic on 57th will detour north onto Sycamore Avenue, east on 41st street, and then south onto SD Highway 11. Westbound on 57th will detour north on SD Highway 11, west on to 41st Street, and then south onto Sycamore Avenue.
The National Weather Service says as much as 4 1/2 inches of rain has been reported. That has led to flooding of streets and roads, and water and sewer backup in some home basements.
Sioux Falls public works officials on Friday morning said they were forced to discharge untreated wastewater into the Big Sioux River when a lift station failed due to flooding. The city notified state environmental officials and were implementing a river monitoring plan.
The city said the untreated wastewater would not affect drinking water, but residents were advised to stay out of the river.
