SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
(Nov. 6, 2010) — Senior receiver Jon Ryan (Watertown, S.D.) caught three of quarterback Jon Eastman’s (Midvale, Utah) four touchdown passes in No. 1 University of Sioux Falls’ 49-0 win at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa this afternoon.
Ryan now has 20 receiving touchdowns on the season, breaking former USF player and coach Kalen DeBoer’s single season school record mark of 19 receiving touchdowns in 1996. Ryan has at least one touchdown reception in every game this year and has had a multiple touchdown effort in eight contests. Eastman now has 33 passing touchdowns to just three interceptions this season.
The defense recorded its second shutout of the season against Dordt (0-9 overall, 0-9 GPAC). The Cougars (9-0 overall, 9-0 GPAC) also shutout Nebraska Wesleyan University 44-0 on Oct. 2 and are leading the country in scoring defense, allowing just 10.1 points per game in the first eight games.
USF hit the board with senior running back Chevon Walker (Fort Meyers, Fla.) taking his second carry of the game 71 yards. Walker would later score in the second quarter on a six yard run, giving him 11 rushing touchdowns this season. Walker accumulated 139 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries this afternoon.
With Eastman touchdown passes of one and 32 yards, both to Ryan, and a three yard rushing touchdown by sophomore running back Jordan Taylor (South Bend, Ind.), the Cougars made the score 28-0 with 5:39 left in the first half. Walker then added his second touchdown of the day with just 36 seconds left in the half, giving USF a 35-0 advantage at halftime.
An Eastman touchdown pass to senior Alex Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and another Eastman to Ryan connection for a seven yard score made the final score 49-0. Eastman totaled 148 pass yards on 11 of 19 passing with the four scores. Junior running back Kristian Porter (Hawarden, Iowa) nearly had his first 100 yard game of the year, totaling 95 yards on 11 carries. Ryan finished with 104 yards on eight receptions, three for a score.
Defensively it was Michael Frericks (So.; Crystal Lake, Ill.) and senior linebacker Dominic Studzinski (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) leading the Cougars with 3.5 tackles. Sophomore defensive back Denzel Adams (Orange, Calif.) recorded an interception for the second straight game. Junior defensive end Eric Ivarsson (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) also had an interception.
USF had their first 300 yard plus rushing attack of the season, totaling 316 yards. The Cougars outgained the Defenders in total yards 500 to 65 on the day.
USF will attempt to have their fifth straight undefeated season in the GPAC when they take on Concordia University (4-6 overall, 3-6 GPAC) next Saturday, Nov. 13 at the USF Sanford Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
