Washington's Warrior (Matt Hermanson)

Bookmark and Share

Matt Hermanson is a coach's son.  His dad, Brian, is the head football coach at Washington High School, and the former Jackrabbit has helped teach his son how to be a star player in his own right.

"It's been kinda fun," said Brian Hermanson.  "Actually I got to coach Matt and a lot of these guys since they were in second grade in basketball."

Football is the sport where Matt has truly excelled.  Hermanson starts on both sides of the ball, already helping lead the Warriors to last year's state title as a quarterback and defensive back.

"He knows what he's doing and I have confidence in him that he can do what he needs to do to get the play done," said teammate and Oklahoma commit Derek Farniok.

As a quarterback, Hermanson has led a prolific offense.  The Warriors have scored 507 points this year.  More than 42 per game.  As a defensive back, he's done even better.  Washington has only given up 55 points all season.  Less than 5 per game.

"Safety is my true love," said Matt.  "Quarterback is just a secondary position to me."

All the while, his father has been able to watch from the sideline.  Sometimes cheering, sometimes doing what a coach needs to do.

"He does get chewed out quite a bit," said Brian.  "And the good thing about Matt is he leaves it here at football.  When he gets chewed out by his father or coach, he can leave it here at practice, and at home, we're just father-son."

Next fall, Matt will attend the University of Montana and play safety for the Grizzlies.  Brian, who played at SDSU, said it was always up to Matt where he would attend school.

"He felt that that just fit him the best right now at this time in his life and you know, he wants to go experience some things and that's great," said Brian.

"It's just a really nice place up there and they win a lot and I like to win," said Matt.

Chances are Montana will continue winning.  After all they have added Matt Hermanson.  And his coach knows that's a pretty good player to have.
