Bookmark and Share

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Nov. 13, 2010)    The University of Sioux Falls football team capped their fifth straight undefeated regular season with a 44-7 win over Concordia University (Neb.) today in chilly and extremely windy conditions at the USF Sanford Complex. The win gives the Cougars their fifth straight out-right Great Plains Athletic Conference championship and serves as the final conference game for USF.

USF’s defense forced seven fumbles and recovered four as the Cougars registered a 100 yard rusher for the second straight game as sophomore Jordan Taylor (South Bend, Ind.) took 16 carries for 104 yards.

Senior quarterback Jon Eastman (Midvale, Utah) threw four touchdowns to four different receivers and totaled 227 pass yards. Eastman has thrown for four or more touchdowns in six games this year, totaling 37 pass scores this season.

CU had the benefit of the wind in the first quarter and was able to remained tied with USF through the first 21 minutes of the game. Eastman found senior receiver Alex Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) for a 22 yard touchdown over the middle of the field to starting a Cougar scoring frenzy.

On the next drive USF linebacker Zach Holmes (Tucson, Ariz.) blocked a punt which resulted in a safety, building a 9-0 lead. The Cougars continued the momentum on the following drive, with Eastman finding senior receiver Jon Ryan (Watertown, S.D.) for a score for the 21st time this season. Ryan’s seven yard touchdown reception ties the GPAC regular season record for touchdown receptions and earned USF 16 points over three minutes, three seconds.

Eastman completed a pass for another touchdown, this time an 18 yard reception by sophomore tight end Austin VanHove (Garretson, S.D.) with one minute left in the half. USF took a 23-0 lead to half time.

The Cougars took the ball right down the field on the opening drive of the second half. Senior running back Chevon Walker (Fort Meyers, Fla.) sprinted 39 yards for a touchdown on the fifth play of the drive, making the score 30-0. It is Walker’s 12th rushing score of the season.

Junior running back Kristian Porter (Hawarden, Iowa) scored the final two touchdowns for USF. First, Porter made catch over the middle of the field for a 26 yard touchdown from Eastman, then increased the Cougar’s lead to 44-0 on a 13 yard sprint to the pylon.

CU was given the ball on the USF 31 yard line on a muffed punt attempt by senior punter Michael Ellison (Whittier, Calif.). A halfback pass from Nate Sindt to Kyle Hoffman for a one yard score broke the Bulldogs into the scoring column.

Defensive tackle Jordan Carlson (Storm Lake, Iowa) lead USF with five tackles and also had one of four fumble recoveries for USF. Senior safety Dan Schmeichel (Odessa, Minn.) also had a recovery with sophomore linebacker Eric Anderson (Irene, S.D.) making two fumble recoveries.

The win extends USF’s winning streak and the nation’s longest winning streak to 39 victories.

USF will learn of their first round opponent for the NAIA playoffs Sunday with a selection show to be streamed live by the Victory Sports Network at 1:30 p.m.
