Jacks Fly Away With 96-79 Win Over T-Birds

Bookmark and Share

Clint Sargent scored 22 points to move into the top-10 in career scoring at South Dakota State and led three Jackrabbits with at least 20 points in a convincing 96-79 win over Southern Utah on Saturday in the 39th Annual Pork Classic.

In addition to Sargent’s 22, the Jacks got 21 points and eight assists from Nate Wolters and 20 points from Jordan Dykstra, while Dale Moss pitched in with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

“What was really nice to see was Clint bounce back from such a poor shooting night against UMKC and know right away that’s not going to linger,” head coach Scott Nagy said after the win. “We needed that from him, and that’s probably as good of a weekend as I’ve seen Dale put together.”

The Jackrabbits improve to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in The Summit League with the win, while the Thunderbirds fall to 6-15 overall and 3-8 in league play.

Ryan Brimley led four T-birds in double figures with 23 points. Damon Heuir added 18, Matt Massey 14 and Jackson Stevenett 12 points in the loss.

After playing close early, the Jacks took a 17-9 lead with 14:55 left in the first half and never led SUU get within eight points the rest of the game.

SDSU led by as many as 18 points in the first half before taking a 45-29 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. The Jacks stretched that lead to as many as 21 in the second half before reaching the final 17-point margin of victory.

The Jacks return to action next weekend with Summit League contests at Oral Roberts on Thursday at 7:05 p.m., and at Centenary on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

NOTES: Clint Sargent moves into 10th all-time on the SDSU career-scoring charts with 1,391 points, but can move into eighth all-time with nine more points ... Sargent needs four three-pointers to break the SDSU career three-point record of 335, a record held by assistant coach Austin Hansen (2000-03) ... the Jacks finished with three 20-point scorers for the first time since Marquise Richardson (26), Jared DeJong (25) and Andy Moeller (20) did it in a 107-104 overtime loss to Nebraska-Omaha in Frost Arena on Jan. 10, 2004 ... The Jackrabbits tied a Pork Classic record with 13 three-pointers in the win. SDSU also made 13 treys on Feb. 15, 1997, in a 102-95 win over North Dakota.
