Jacks Win Thriller at IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Macie Michelson’s jumper with 51 seconds remaining in the game gave South Dakota State the lead and the Jackrabbits made the plays down the stretch to down IPFW, 50-47, in Summit League women’s basketball action Monday night.

With their season-best fourth consecutive victory, SDSU improved to 15-13 overall and solidified its hold on fourth place in the league standings with an 11-6 mark in league play. Second-place IPFW had its five-game league winning streak snapped, falling to 18-8 overall and 12-4 in The Summit League.

Trailing 47-45 with under two minutes to play, Jill Young pulled the Jackrabbits to within a point by sinking one of two free throws. With the shot clock winding down on its next possession, Michelson drained a 12-footer from outside the lane to give SDSU the lead, then drew a charge on the defensive end.

After the Jackrabbits missed the front end of a 1-and-1, IPFW missed a shot for the lead that was rebounded by Jennifer Schuttloffel. The senior from Sioux Falls then stepped to the free throw line and converted both attempts with 17 seconds remaining. The Mastodons had a chance to tie the game, but Schuttloffel blocked Amanda Hyde’s three-point attempt as time expired.

SDSU led nearly the entire evening, building an 18-10 lead on Young’s second three-pointer of the first half. Young added another trifecta later in the half as the Jackrabbits took a 24-16 lead into intermission.

The Jackrabbits took their largest lead of the night, 26-16, as Katie Lingle opened the second-half scoring. After Young converted a traditional three-point play, SDSU led 36-27 with 13:30 remaining in the game.

IPFW chipped away at the deficit behind the play of junior Stephanie Rosado, who scored 11 of the Mastodons’ next 15 points to make the score 45-42. The Mastodons tied the game at 45-all moments later on a Anne Boese three-pointer and took their first lead since 2-0 on a jumper by Rosado at the 2:03 mark.

The Jackrabbits won despite one of their poorest shooting nights of the season. SDSU finished 16-of-48 from the field, 33.3 percent, including 7-of-19 from three-point range. Young and freshman reserve Hannah Strop each made three three-pointers in the contest. At the line, the Jackrabbits made 11-of-14 attempts, 78.6 percent.

IPFW shot only slightly better, making 18-of-48 attempts from the floor, 37.5 percent, including a 3-for-12 effort from long range. The Mastodons made 8-of-11 free throws, 72.7 percent.

A junior from Mitchell, Young turned in her first career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to pace the Jackrabbits’ 33-29 advantage on the boards. Michelson ended the game with 10 points.

Rosado ended the night with a game-high 23 points and added six rebounds for IPFW.

SDSU closes out the regular season Saturday (Feb. 26) with a matchup at North Dakota State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena on the NDSU campus in Fargo.
