Vermillion, S.D. - - Kyle McKelvey of Beresford and Seth Boomsma of Tri-Valley were named co-MVPs of the Class A boys, while Shelby Houlihan of Sioux City East earned MVP honors for the Class A girls at the 2011 Dan Lennon Invitational Monday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. Four records fell at the meet, which featured more than 1,300 athletes.
McKelvey, who has signed a letter of intent to continue his track and field career at South Dakota, had a dominant, record-setting performance in the shot put. McKelvey set a new meet record in the shot put with a throw of 63-4 ½ -- which is the sixth-best throw by a prep athlete indoors this season. Houlihan was also part of the East 4x400 relay team that set a new meet record of 4:05.67 Houlihan also won the 1,600 run (5:17.63).
Also at the meet, longtime volunteer and meet supporter Ken Beringer of Vermillion, S.D., was honored with the 2011 Dan Lennon Award. Beringer started his track career at Tyndall (S.D.) High School, where he was coached by Floyd Nelson. Beringer attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, where he lettered in college track. Beringer coached track in Winner, Salem and Lennox before he became track coach at Vermillion. During that time, his sons, Joe, Jeff and Jon, would help at the Dan Lennon meet, shoveling snow from the bleachers and off the track at Inman Field. The meet is now the Dan Lennon Relays which is held annually at the DakotaDome. Beringer has volunteered at the Dan Lennon Relays for more than 30 years.
