Ashley Meyer, A Selfless Star

Last season, Ashley Meyer led Augustana pitching with a 20-7 record, a 1.56 ERA and 121 strikeouts, but you won't hear her taking any credit for that.
"I think it has a lot to do with the defense also, putting up runs, I think it's definitely a team effort," Meyer said, "Everybody's playing well and the games reflect that."
Even after one of her best performances of this season, a nine strikeout, two-hit shutout of USF, it's all about the team in Meyer's eyes.
"It's a team effort and just thinking one pitch at a time," Meyer said, "that's what's going through my head, and knowing I have a great defense behind me."
And that's something Vikings Head Coach Gretta Melsted loves about Meyer, and her squad. Their selfless resolve that leads to great teamwork on the field.
"That's what make Augie softball, Augie softball." Melsted said, "The kids really play for each other. And a lot of times they don't like to take credit, they get a little embarassed taking credit for the things they've done well and they want to compliment their teammates for what their teammates are doing too."
But Melsted knows to give credit where credit's due.
"Ashley Meyer had a fantastic game and just did a great job and she's been doing that all year long for us." Melsted said, "I don't know how much more you can ask from a kid than that, just a great performance today."
And as long as those great performances keep coming, so will the wins for Augie, even if Meyer doesn't want to admit it.
