A gun is fired in a neighborhood in Yankton and the unexplained shots have the police department searching for answers.
A street that's known for being a peaceful part of town is now being canvassed by cops.
Jarod Myer lives in the neighborhood and says, "They just asked me if anything was out of the ordinary in my house, if my doors were locked or unlocked and everything was in place."
Police are going door to door around the corner of 12th and Burleigh looking for the person responsible for pulling a trigger in a residential area.
Janeane Steinberg says, "I hope they find out who did it, i mean it may be just someone shooting at a gopher but they shouldn't be doing that either."
Multiple shots are fired in the middle of the day, a sound that has some neighbors a little spooked.
Myer says,"It's just stressful to come home to a shooting in the area.. and hopefully it was just shots I guess."
While many residents in this neighborhood were suprised to have gunshots so close to their homes, what has them even more unsettled is the shots were only 2 blocks away from an elementary school.
Myers says, "What's going on...it's just scary."
A scary situation, but as police patrol the streets minds are more at ease.
All schools in Yankton were put on lockdown, but students were released a short time later.
