It's a very serious situation that has gained the attention of parents, and lawmakers across the country.
Every 26 seconds, a car crash occurs involving drivers using a cell phone or texting in the United States.
Miss South Dakota, Loren Vaillancourt joined us on the morning show, Tuesday to tell us more about this ever pressing issue and share with us her personal story on why distracted driving is such an important issue.
In her personal quest to bring awareness to distracted driving Loren told us about a great fundraiser coming up this weekend to help further fund distracted driving awareness to schools across South Dakota.
The quest is also near and dear to Loren's heart. In 2009, her brother was killed by a distracted driver. In light of of the Vaillancourt's tragedy she has made this her sole purpose during her reign as Miss South Dakota.
The Race Against Distracted Driving takes place this Saturday, June 11 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
It is a 5K, but Loren says you don't need to be a runner to enjoy the race.
To register for the race go to www.allsportcentral.com and search for the race by title or date.
The cost to participate is $5 per person, $15 for families (limit of 5) and $30 for teams (limit of 10).
You can also register at the race by cash only.
