Thielbar Stunned To Get Big League Callup

DETROIT, MI -- Caleb Thielbar had no idea a promotion to the Big Leagues was coming.Since joining the Minnesota Twins, opponents have no idea how to solve him.Since joining the Twins on Monday, Thielbar has thrown four innings striking out four, allowing just one hit and no runs.It still sounds unbelivable to Thielbar, who was floored the moment he first got the call in Rochester. Well the manager in Rochester, Gene Glynn, called me in about noon on Monday and asked me if I'd heard from anyone, and obviously I said no, why? And he said, well, you're going to the big leagues. And honestly I was kind of at a loss for words obviously. And it was just a pretty unbelievable feeling. Thielbar says.

Pierre Avenges Title Loss To O'Gorman

YANKTON, S.D. -- For two years the Pierre girl's golf team has had the state's best individual golfer in Hallie Getz. This season they had the best team. Getz easily won her second consecutive team title, eight shots clear of the runner up.And the rest of her teammates also shined, helping the Govs win the team title by three strokes over O'Gorman, which had a bit of extra irony to it. Last year we were leading first day and O'Gorman outplayed us the second day, and this year it was just reversed. You know, much tougher golf course of course, but the girls just didn't give up and kind of hung with it and we ended up winning by a couple. So it was quite a battle. Pierre Head Coach John Knox says.

The month of May started out to be somewhat disappointing, at least for those who aren’t fans of the snow. As you already know, many of us picked up at least an inch across the southeast; but it is important to note that the additional moisture is helping with the drought situation.

SF City Council Debates Federal Aid

For the last several weeks, clean-up crews have been all over the city of Sioux Falls picking up the debris from April's ice storm.“The work is still ongoing and we're getting bills in everyday from the work we've done over the last 5 or 6 weeks and we do know it’s going to be several million dollars, said City Emergency Manager, Regan SmithThe storm lasted three days and caused several million dollars’ worth of damage, but with the help of federal aid, the bill could be much lower.“It's likely we could be receiving funds as early as this fall,” said Smith. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been in Sioux Falls the last couple of weeks, to determine what portions of the clean-up effort are eligible for reimbursement. While the city has applied for assistance, some city council members question whether the storm damage was extensive enough to merit the funding. “I look at the process of receiving FEMA money as an opportunity for the city, in at least one instance, to finally take off the training wheels, said Sioux Falls City Council member, Greg Jamison.Jamison believes Sioux Falls is a strong enough city that it can cover the cleanup costs without federal aid and that we should allow other harder hit areas, like Oklahoma, to utilize the government's funding. Here's our chance to kind of push them back and say OK, we got this one. You guys go do other things. And maybe if everyone around the country catches...

Chicago, IL – The United States Hockey League today announced that Cary Eades of the Sioux Falls Stampede has been named the 2012-13 USHL Coach of the Year as determined by a vote of USHL coaches and general managers. In just his first season behind the bench for the Stampede, Eades led the team to a 45-17-2 record and the top spot in the USHL Western Conference. The 45 wins tied for the most in the USHL (Dubuque Fighting Saints) and were the most in team history, surpassing the previous record of 43 during the 2005-06 season. Sioux Falls also recorded 24 victories on home ice to set a new team record, while their 21 victories on the road led the entire USHL. The Stampede earned a team record 92 points in the standing under the direction of Eades this season, 51 more points than they accumulated last year. That increase represents the largest turnaround in USHL history from one season to the next, surpassing the 50-point improvement made by the Green Bay Gamblers in the 2008-09 season during the first year with Jon Cooper as head coach. Sioux Falls hit new offensive highs with Eades at the helm as they scored 241 goals, the most for the team in the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present). They were just one of three USHL teams that boasted six different players who scored 20...

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Western Illinois scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning, knocking off top-seeded South Dakota State, 4-2, in the opening game of the Summit League Baseball Championship. The Fighting Leathernecks, who received an eight-inning pitching performance from Aaron Michel, improved to 19-35 overall and will face the winner between second-seeded Oakland or third-seeded North Dakota State at 1 p.m. Eastern Time (noon Central) on Friday. SDSU, which fell to 31-22 overall, will face the loser of Thursday’s late game in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Eastern on Friday.
Jacks Confident Going To Summit League Tourney

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- For 15 consecutive years the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles won the Summit League's automatic bid to the N-C-Double-A Baseball Tournament. So if you can't beat them, get them out of the league! With Eagles flying to the Southland Conference, the door might finally be open for SDSU to make their first trip to baseball's Big Dance. The Summit League Tournament started today with the Jacks entering as the only team above .500 (31-21) and holding the top seed.S-D-S-U has finished runner up at the tournament three of the last four seasons, losing each time to Oral Roberts, and feels it's their time to finally capture an elusive Summit League Tournament title. Definitely. From the beginning of the season we thought we had a very good chance to this thing. And NDSU was the other favorite to win it and they've kind of fallen off a little bit so we're feeling pretty confident right now. SDSU Senior Pitcher Layne Somsen says. Going through the league it's pretty spread out, pretty wide open, but I think right now we're playing well and it's a perfect time to get going. SDSU senior IF/OF Andrew Melton says. We've talked since the beginning of the fall about, we're going to have ten games in the last eight days of the season, we want to put our team in the opportunity to make a run and win the thing. SDSU Manager Dave Schrage says.

Splash Central In Huron Opens Friday

What used to be a college in Huron is now a water park, complete with a lazy river. And if it wasn't for the people of the Huron community, this dream would never have become a reality. The pools are filled, the water is flowing and the slides are getting their final inspections before go time. And the attractions at Splash Central are sure to please. “We have our leisure pool right here for the kids that the Body Slide enters into and then we have the lazy river which the Master Blaster Express empties into,” said park director Laurie McGirr. The four and half story slides are a far cry from the campus that used to call this spot of land home. And the director of Splash Central knows just how the community is feeling losing an institution of higher learning. “I graduated from HU in 1997, played college basketball and college softball while I was here,” said McGirr. While there will always be a place in her hear for her alma mater in McGirr knows this water park will bring smiles to thousands of kids throughout the years. “The kids are exited. The community of Huron is excited. So, it's just been an array of emotions from start to finish,” said McGirr....

Interlock Devices Proven Successful In SD

The state of south dakota began using Ignition Interlock Devices for the 24/7 Sobriety Program last October. After looking at the results, officials can now say the devices are an effective way to test drunk drivers.Say you get busted for drinking and driving in South Dakota and you're required to go through the 24/7 Sobriety Program. It used to be you would have to come here to take a Preliminary Breath Test or PBT twice a day or have a ankle bracelet that tests alcohol consumption attached to your leg. But now there's a different option, a much more convenient one.Minnehaha County 24/7 Compliance Deputy Elliot Crayne said, Some people have conflicting schedules due to work, due to school or are just unable to make it due to other reasons. It's called the Ignition Interlock Device. Implemented into the 24/7 program last fall, it's basically a PBT test on the go. It uses a GPS to track an offenders location and a camera to detect if someone else is using it. The person is required to test twice a day.Crayne said, You have to give a clean sample of breath to allow it to start your vehicle and to allow it to keep running. So far 119 people have used it in the state. After nearly 125,000 tests were given, it's been determined an effective way to combat drunk driving.Crayne said, It's one of the newer technologies, it was tested earlier in the program and now it's...

Boy Scouts Approve Plan To Accept Openly Gay Boys

The Boy Scouts of America's National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as Scouts.Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.Under the proposal drafted by the Scouts' governing board, gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders. The outcome is unlikely to end a bitter debate over the Scouts' membership policy. Some conservative churches that sponsor Scout units wanted to continue excluding gay youths, in some cases threatening to defect if the ban were lifted. More liberal Scout leaders - while supporting the proposal to accept gay youth - have made clear they want the ban on gay adults lifted as well.

Rapid City Landfill Fire Almost Contained

A yard waste fire that has been burning for a week at the Rapid City landfill is nearly contained. Officials say the blaze should be fully out by the end of the week. When the blaze broke out on May 16, firefighters said they would let it burn itself out, a process that could take as long as two weeks. But City Solid Waste Superintendent Karl Merbach says officials have gained control of the fire and will extinguish it earlier. Officials don't know for sure how the fire started but think combustion might have played a role. The fire area was about the size of 1 ½ football fields, and the blaze produced heavy smoke.

Corps Study Addresses Missouri River Sediment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a new study indicates that high discharge, short duration reservoir releases out of Fort Randall Dam could help flush fine sediment out of the Missouri River. The corps says it has been concerned about the buildup of silt and sand behind Gavins Point Dam since the dam was constructed during the 1950s. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2003 recommended that the corps study the feasibility of hydraulic flushing to provide sand for shorebird habitat below Gavins to aid in habitat development. Corps staff and basin stakeholders will be looking at combinations of flow, timing and infrastructure modifications that could more effectively transport sand downstream. The second phase of the study is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Casino Petition Calls For Iowa Mayor To Resign

An online petition is calling for the mayor of Sioux City to resign over his role in replacing the Argosy riverboat casino with a Hard Rock-branded facility. The petition at Change.org questions the impartiality of Mayor Bob Scott and other city officials during the selection of a land-based casino to replace the riverboat property. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission awarded a state gaming license last month to Sioux City Entertainment. Penn National Gaming Co. owns the Argosy and has criticized how Sioux City Entertainment was selected over other applicants. A Penn spokeswoman says the company is not involved in the petition, which was launched this week by a South Dakota resident. It had more than 100 supporters as of Thursday.

Under the education deal, schools will get an increase in basic funding and additional dollars will be provided to districts that boost minimum teacher pay and offer leadership perks. Lawmakers also agreed to a compromise health care plan that will seek federal funding to provide health care coverage to an estimated 150,000 low-income residents.
