Life With Laura: Sioux Falls Roller Dollz

Bookmark and Share

Off the track, they're your everyday women.

Some are stay at home moms. Others are hair stylists. But once they put on their gear and get on the track, they are the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz.

“I’m Leah Simmons at work. I’m Julia Wild at practice. Leah Simmons is cool, but Julia wild is awesome,” said SF Roller Dollz skater, Leah Simmons.

The Sioux Falls Roller Dollz are the first all women flat track derby team in South Dakota.

“There's a ton of them now so that's pretty big distinction," said Simmons.

The team came together in 2006. A group of women from all walks of life who share a common interest: the desire to play derby.

“We get to beat people up for fun!" said Simmons.

While these women may look tough, they have a soft spot too.

“We really work to empower women in the community," said Simmons.

After a brief summer vacation, the Roller Dollz will break out their skates to compete in a double header on Saturday, with the first bout against an old rival -The Black Hills Rushmore Rollers.

“They’ve been talking some trash about us so we're really looking forward to a little East river/West river smack down,” said Simmons.

To prepare for a match up like the one this weekend takes plenty of hard work and a lot of determination.

“This is not an easy sport.  I mean this is a full contact sport,” said Simmons. “You will get hit.  You will fall down a lot and you've got to get back up.”

It may not be a sport for everyone, but just like any team activity, there are lessons to be learned.

“I'm always learning new things,” said Simmons. “I’m learning things through my teammates, through other teams and it gives me a sense of accomplishment to take on these really hard tasks and accomplish them. Plus you get to hit people!”

Watch the Roller Dollz in action Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Coliseum.
