SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

There's no better time than the present to adopt a pet, and this month happens to be National Senior Pet Adoption Month.

Justin Shatto from Woofs and Waves says older pets need different care than younger pets do. Shatto says senior pets need fewer calories in their food so they don't become overweight, which can put even more stress on hips and joints. He adds that hip and joint products can take away pets' pain. Shatto says they can even special order products, like mini stairs for the bed or couch.

Malorie Adamson from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society says they are accepting owner surrenders once again, but they still have hundreds of pets looking for new homes. She says the application to become pre-screened for adoption is a single piece of paper, front and back. It asks questions about where you live, any other pets you might have, landlord checks, and so on. She says you can be approved to look at the pets in about ten minutes!

Whiskers is a ten-year-old owner surrendered cat who's full of energy! She is available for adoption at the SFAHS.
