Any homeowner knows that maintaining, improving and protecting your home is a year-round project that can bring stress and uncertainty.

In fact, according to a new survey by Liberty Mutual Insurance, more than half of Americans are worried that an unexpected issue will arise in their house.

HGTV's Chip Wade says now is the time to start winterizing your home to make sure those unexpected issues don't arise. Wade says to start with outdoor work like pressure-washing, spraying for bugs, checking the insulation in the attic, and caulking your doors and windows. He adds there are a few things to steer clear from or to be careful doing, like roof work and cleaning out the gutters. Some things are better left to the experts if that's not in your level of expertise.
