SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

As a new school year begins, it's the perfect time to get your daughter involved in a Girl Scout troop. Plus, the girl scouts family Day of Play is coming up for the whole family to learn more about the organization.

Nancy Tapken from the Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons says GSDH will be making their way all over the region to get girls involved in local troops. She says the fall season is always a "crazy time" for the Girl Scouts because so many families are signing up for troops. Tapken says the Girl Scouts offers so much more than just the cookie sales. She says it's the broadest base of different experiences your girl could have, and she says each girl's experience is only limited to her own imagination. If a girl wants to go rock climbing, the troop can go rock climbing. If a girl wants to go to a science camp, the troop can sign up for a science camp. The Girl Scouts also take a number of trips around the country and around the world each year. Tapken says there's something for every girl.

"If you're a parent who believes that your girl can be whoever she wants to be and do whatever she wants to do, Girl Scouts believes that too," Tapken said. "When a girl has all those different people in her life who believe in her, suddenly her potential goes through the roof."

The Girl Scouts family Day of Play is a free event that's a little more active and sports-oriented. The University of Sioux Falls will have a number of athletics teams on hand playing games with kids. Parents can learn more about the organization, plus they'll have their new cookie baker, too. The Day of Play will be Saturday, September 17 at the Sanford Pentagon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
