SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

Children's literature comes to life on stage this weekend as the Sioux Empire Community Theatre presents, “The Secret Garden.” It's the start of the theatre company's fifth season, and there's no better way than with a blockbuster musical.

Tim Hanson, playing Archibald Craven, says "The Secret Garden" is based on the novel, which has been made into a musical and a movie. It's about a young orphaned girl who comes to live with her uncle, who has lost his wife and has a son with his own problems. The girl discovers a garden around the house that seems to be magical and a mystery. Emerson Townsend, who plays Mary Lennox-- the orphan, says her character is "kind of a spoiled brat." She says Mary is scared of the house, and that leads her to discovering the garden, which she's not so sure about! Emerson says she loves being a part of the theatre because its fun to play her character and fun to be around other members of the theatre.

"The Secret Garden" shows Thursday through Sunday, October 13 through 23. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The performance shows at the theater on 315 N Phillips Ave in Sioux Falls.
