The City of Sioux Falls says East Rice Street will reopen between Cleveland Ave. and Timberline Ave. at 4:30 p.m. today. Construction on the railroad crossing near Great Bear has been completed.
“Thank you to all of the commuters for their patience, as we know the closure of this road was certainly not convenient. We, too, are extremely glad to have the road reopened and traffic back to normal in the northeast part of Sioux Falls,” says Chad Huwe, City Engineer.
On November 18, 2016, the Ellis & Eastern Company was switching cars into the Rail to Road Transloading facility on Rice Street and, as they passed through the Rice Street crossing, three cars derailed.
City officials say the derailment caused damage to the Rice Street road that made it impassable to the traveling public. Construction included welding new rail joints in the crossing, placement of concrete crossing panels, and asphalt paving.
