PIERRE, S.D. -

The number of absentee ballot requests made in South Dakota has reached over 103,000 as of Monday.

According to Secretary of State Shantel Krebs, the highest number of absentee ballots cast in an election in South Dakota is nearly 101,000 during the 2008 presidential election. Over 91,000 absentee ballots were submitted during the 2012 presidential election and nearly 95,000 in the 2004 presidential election.

Krebs says because of the high number of absentee ballots being submitted, that it is likely to slow the results of this year's election.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. according to local times.
