The Midco Aquatic Center will soon be South Dakota's home for swim meets.
Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether, alongside Director of Parks and Recreation Don Kearney and Sioux Falls Swim Team President Jason Ahrendt, announced several meets taking place at the start of next year.
Mayor Huether said the city has been working on this announcement since March while preparing to get the new facility’s first swim meets “right.”
The mayor also said, however, that “misinformation” led to rumors which created a tough tide.
"I actually had people calling me from Yankton, calling me from Watertown, calling me from Aberdeen and what they were doing is they were saying “mayor, I can't believe that you're not going to utilize the Midco Aquatic Center for swim meets,” said Mayor Huether.
Huether said he believes "special interests" of individuals created the idea there would be no swim meets.
He attributed careful planning to the reasoning behind the delay in announcing the meets.
Ahrendt said there are still some details that need fine tuning before next year.
"We've got another training session for our folks that are using the video board and the timing equipment scheduled in the next month to hopefully work out more bugs so then that first meet that we have the first week of January will be ready to go,” said Ahrendt.
Details for the upcoming swim meets are as follow:
