MINNEAPOLIS -

More than 110 schools in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa have canceled classes in anticipation of the first significant wintry blast of the season.

Forecasters predict blizzard conditions beginning Friday across central Minnesota where 6 to 12 inches of snow could accumulate by nightfall. Winds of 50 to 60 mph are expected to make travel very difficult.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Friday in eastern parts of North and South Dakota and western Minnesota, as well as winter storm warnings for other parts of those states and Nebraska.
