Whether it be the NFL, college, high school, even Pop Warner, football is usually a sport taken up by the boys.

But a very special team at George McGovern Middle School this year is creating a new perception of the sport.

The Eagles practice just like every other middle school football team.

But take a closer look and you'll notice that this team isn’t like any of the others.

“I kinda flaunt it and show it off and like yeah I play football, and I'm proud of it!" said 7th grader Tabbatha Linday.

This team is made up of girls and boys.

The girls, who play every position from quarterback to linebacker, say to them, it’s no big deal.

But to others can be a bit of a surprise.

"We play games against other teams that have no girls, and they look at me like I'm from outer space or something,” said 12-year-old Madison Gough.

Being a girl in a "boys" sport has come with some adversity.

“The first game the guy that I was going against, he saw that I was a girl and he just backed up,” said Reese Marlow.

But the girls say they're tough enough to handle it.

“I've told my team that I don't want to be treated like a girl, I want to be treated like a teammate,” said Tabbatha Lindsay.

As hard as the girls are working on the football field, they’re working just has hard off of it to break the perception that girls can’t play football.

“I just say go for your dreams don't let anyone tell you any different,” said Shay Nolden.

“If someone says you can't do anything, basically don't listen to them because you can do anything you want you just have to believe in yourself and if a guy tells you can't do something because you're a girl, they are completely wrong. Because girls can do the same thing guys can do and they can do it just as good if not better,” said Lindsay.

They may be in middle school now, but breaking barriers has no age limit.

“My grandmas been telling me, 'Madison you better join the Cowboys and the NFL when you get older.’ I was like, ‘Okay grandma!”

The eagles will play another football game Monday, October 18. The 7th grade team's record so far this season is 2-1.
