SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

The state's first freestanding emergency department opened its doors in Sioux Falls, for a couple of hours.

Avera held an open house at the new Avera Medical Group Family Health Center.

The facility will offer 24/7 access to emergency care as well as urgent care, optometry, occupational medicine, gynecology and pediatrics.

The only thing the 84,000 sq. ft. center doesn't have is operating rooms.

The Family Health Center is located on the west side of town on South Marion Road.

"There's 14 doctors to start with, but that will increase as time goes on, so I think it's going to be a great service to this side of town and we're excited to be more involved here,” says Avera regional president David Kapaska.

"It'll save us a lot of time because it's hard to get across town if there's an emergency, so that will help us out there,” says Cindy Aman who lives on the west side of town. “If you have to go to doctor's appointments or labs, it'll be just be right here where you can do everything in one stop.”

The main floor, which includes the emergency department, urgent care, radiology, occupational medicine and eye care will open first on Oct. 12 at 7 a.m.

The second floor will open in December and the third in January.
