SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

South Dakota is among the Top 5 states for having the largest percentage of volunteers per capita to respond to Hurricane Matthew according to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross says outside of the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, South Dakota is at the top of the chart.

Over 27 Red Cross workers from South Dakota have been deployed with an additional five volunteers expected to deploy at the end of the week.

U.S. officials have estimated the damage from Hurricane Matthew to be around $6 billion. This is the costliest hurricane since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 the Red Cross says.
