SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

The South Dakota Department of Corrections says an inmate from the State Penitentiary died from suicide today.

According to a D.O.C. statement, inmate Nicholas Tchida, 25, was hospitalized on Sept. 4 after he was found hanging in his cell at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

He passed away Friday.

Officials say Tchida serving an eight-year sentence with four years suspended for possession of a controlled substance, and a concurrent eight-year sentence with four years suspended for distribution of a controlled substance out of Roberts County.

An autopsy is being conducted.
