Augustana University women's basketball (2-2) knocked down a season-high 16 3-pointers in a 96-53 win over Buena Vista University (0-1) on Tuesday night at the Elmen Center. Four players scored in double-figures for the Vikings, led by Paige Peterson who recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Logan O'Farrell added 15 points and eight rebounds for Augustana. She was 4 of 11 from the field and hit 5 of 6 free throws on the night. Presley O'Farrell pitched in with 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting, including a career-high tying three 3-pointers.
Naomi Rust scored 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting and Sydney Rome and Hana Metoxen each pitched in with nine.
Augustana finished the night shooting 42.1 percent from the field hitting 32 of 76 shots from the field. The Vikings knocked down 16 of 44 3-pointers on the night, shooting 36.4 percent from behind the arc. Augustana shot well from the free throw line on the night hitting 16 of 20 from the stripe.
The Vikings forced Buena Vista into 33 turnovers on the night, marking the second time this season Augustana has forced 30-plus turnovers. Buena Vista shot just 24.7 percent (18 of 73) from the field, including 7 of 28 from 3-point range.
Claudia Larsen led Buena Vista with a double-double, 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jasmine Demers also picked up a double-double for Buena Vista finishing with 10 points and 10 boards.
Both teams started the game just 1 for 4 from the field but the Vikings were able to get to the free throw line early in the contest. Augustana was 4 of 4 from the line helping build a 6-2 lead. The Vikings pressured Buena Vista throughout the first quarter, forcing 14 turnovers.
Augustana went on a 20-2 run to start the game before taking a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Presley O'Farrell had the touch off the bench scoring eight points in eight minutes on the court.
Buena Vista opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run, getting back-to-back 3-pointers to cut Augustana's lead to 10 but Presley O'Farrell knocked down her third triple of the half in transition on Augustana's next possession to stop the run and stretch the Vikings' lead to 13 at 28-15.
The Vikings finished the first half shooting 38.1 percent (16 of 42) from the field, knocking down seven 3-pointers. Peterson had a huge first half for Augustana picking up a double-double in 14 minutes of action with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Augustana went into the locker room with a 45-27 lead at the break. The Vikings led by as much as 19 in the first half after forcing Buena Vista into 20 turnovers. Buena Vista shot 28.6 percent (10 of 35) from the field, including 3 of 13 from behind the arc.
The Vikings out-scored Buena Vista 27-9 in the third quarter to build a 72-36 lead. Augustana was 8 of 20 from the field in the second half, knocking down four 3-pointers. Logan O'Farrell scored 11 points in the third quarter alone to help the Vikings stretch their lead to 36. Buena Vista was just 2 of 20 from the field in the third.
Augustana continued to build on its lead in the fourth quarter. McKenzee Zilverberg was 3 of 6 from 3-point range in the fourth to lead the Vikings with nine points. Danni Honner added five points and Abby Hora knocked down a 3-pointer and finished the night with four points and three rebounds.
The Vikings return to action on Friday, Nov. 18, hosting Dordt at 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
