SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -

The Augustana soccer team needed overtime to defeat the pesky Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston at Morstad Field on Sunday. Rebekah Thoresenscored the game winning goal in overtime to give the Vikings the 2-1 victory. Augustana improves to 9-4-1 (8-2-1 NSIC) good for third in the NSIC.

The first half was all Augustana but they couldn't push a goal across. The Vikings outshot the Golden Eagles in the first half 13-3 with Augustana putting seven shots on goal compared to two by Minnesota Crookston.

Augustana broke the scoreless tie late in the second half with Emily Jacobson scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute. It was Jacobson's third goal of the season and Augustana's first penalty kick this year.

Minnesota Crookston answered in the 87th minute when Hannah Riveland scored on a header to tie the match at one and forcing overtime.

The Vikings scored in the fourth minute of overtime to seal the victory. Jacobson fired a corner kick into the box and Thoresen was in the right place for the header to give Augustana the victory.

Offensively, the Vikings outshot the Golden Eagles 24-8 and had 12 shots on goal compared to five by Minnesota Crookston. Jacobson led the team with three points and Ellie Knowles had seven shots and four shots on goal.

Senior Nicole Grinager made her first career start in goal for Augustana. Grinager recorded four saves on eight shots faced to earn her first career victory.

Augustana will travel north next weekend for a pair of road NSIC matchups. The Vikings will play at St. Cloud State on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. and will play at Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
