Senior quarterback Trey Heid became Augustana's all-time leader in touchdown passes after passing for four touchdowns and 263 yards in a 56-3 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston (0-3) on Saturday afternoon. Heid has now thrown for 11 touchdowns in 2016 giving him 75 for his career.
Augustana (3-0) finished with over 400 yards of total offense for the third straight game, going for 484 yards, including 162 rushing yards and 322 yards through the air.
Matt Heller had a big day for the Vikings hauling in five passes for 149 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. Heller has registered 100-plus receiving yards in 10 career games.
Augustana rushed for three touchdowns getting one from Heid, Jackie Davis and DJ Luke. Davis led the Vikings with 65 rushing yards on 10 carries. Heid ended the game with 63 rushing yards and Luke picked up 28 yards on four carries.
Jake Welsheimer caught his second career touchdown pass, a 21-yard strike from Heid at the end of the first quarter.
Augustana Minnesota Crookston to 219 yards of total offense. The Golden Eagles passed for 128 yards while rushing for just 91. Augustana has held its opponent to under 100 rushing yards in two straight games. The Viking defense recorded 10.0 tackles for loss, marking the third straight game with 10 or more tackles for loss.
Trevor Naasz led Augustana with six tackles while Kirby Hora, Keyvion Mayhan, Colton Steer and Zac Johnson each finished with five.
After going three-and-out on the first possession of the day, Augustana's offense exploded for 35 unanswered points in the first half jumping out to a 35-0 lead.
The Vikings finished the half with 263 yards of total offense, including 189 yards through the air. Heid finished the half completing 8 of 15 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. With his third touchdown pass of the game, Heid became Augustana's all-time leader in touchdown passes passing Josh Hanson who threw for 73 touchdowns from 2009 to 2012.
Augustana opened up the scoring on a four-yard touchdown pass from Heid to Heller after Avram Tynes set up the offense at the UMC 15-yard line after a 38-yard punt return.
The Vikings extended their lead to 14-0 with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter when Heid ran for a four-yard score. Augustana quickly got the ball back with a short field after Zac Johnson blocked his first of two punts in the first half setting up the offense at the UMC 21-yard line. Heid then found Jake Welsheimer for a 21-yard strike giving Augustana a 21-0 lead with 1:33 to play in the first quarter.
Heid then set the career record with his 74th career touchdown pass, a 55-yard bomb to Heller giving the Vikings a 28-0 lead. With 1:33 remaining in the first half, Zac Johnson blocked his second punt of the game and Brett Shepley scooped it up and ran into the end zone giving Augustana a 35-0 lead.
The Vikings held Minnesota Crookston to 131 yards of total offense, including just 23 rushing yards. Kirby Hora and Trevor Naasz led the defense with five tackles in the half.
Augustana picked up where it left off in the first half going on a nine-play, 61-yard scoring drive to open the second half. Davis found the end zone on an eight-yard run putting Augustana in front 42-0 and four minutes later, Heid found Heller for his third receiving touchdown of the game, this time a 22-yard completion that gave Augustana a 49-0 lead.
Luke made it 56-0 with 11:39 remaining in the game when he plunged into the end zone for his second career rushing touchdown before Minnesota Crookston got on the board with a 28-yard field goal by Mike Maw to make the final score 56-3.
Augustana will hit the road for a Top 25 match-up next Saturday as the Vikings will take on No. 23 Minnesota Duluth at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota.
