BROOKINGS, S.D. -

South Dakota State made it's road to a fifth straight FCS playoff a lot harder last night with their 38-31 loss to Cal Poly.

With the loss SDSU enters the rugged Missouri Valley Football Conference with a 1-2 record, meaning they'll have to be nearly perfect in a league slate that includes road games at NDSU, UNI and Illinois State if they're to get back to the postseason.

Of course if the Jackrabbit defense doesn't improve it really doesn't matter who they play.  Though Poly's Triple Option is tough to defense it still can't excuse giving up 600 yards of offense.

The Jacks are off next week, but it might not be a good time for the bye with confidence wavering.  SDSU will host Western Illinois in their Missouri Valley opener in two weeks.
