MITCHELL, SD -

The only thing more jaw dropping than Spencer Neugebauer's play on the field....

"Explosiveness. And you can combine that with his ability to have vision but also the speed to run away from the defenders." Mitchell Head Football Coach Kent VanOverschelde says.

...Are the numbers he's put up during his career.

"They make a big deal out of you're scored this many touchdowns and to me it's cool but it's a lot of fun being out here with my whole team." Mitchell Senior RB/LB Spencer Neugebauer says.

This year the senior has set Mitchell's single season rushing record with 1,955 yards. He already holds the Kernels career record with just over 3400 yards. And with four more touchdowns this past weekend, he now holds the South Dakota state record for touchdowns in a single season with 39.

"It's just an honor, especially with some of the big-time running backs that have come through the state. I haven't really put it into words quite yet." Neugebauer Says.

What could be even more remarkable about Spencer is that he might be happiest when his teammates get to carry the mail. Backfield mate Sam Michels has nearly 700 yards and eight scores.

"When you apply that unselfish attitude to whatever you do and the best way to get anything in life is to help other people get what they want and Spencer Neugebauer is a great young man and an exceptional football player." VanOverschelde says.

And after running for a school record 325 yards in their semifinal win over Pierre, Neugebauer has the Kernels in the state championship for the first time since 1993 and the most important achievement left....

"We just know that we've just got one more game together and we've just got to go lay it all out there." Spencer says.
