Former Augustana University men's basketball student-athlete Alex Richter has signed a contract to play professionally for The Island Storm of the National Basketball League of Canada.

The Island Storm franchise is located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Richter, a native of Lakeville, Minnesota, becomes the 22nd former Viking to sign a professional contract, the second from the 2015-16 National Championship team. Daniel Jansen signed to play professionally for Limburg United in the Belgian League earlier this year.

"I'm very fortunate to have the opportunity to play the game I love at the professional level," Richter said. "I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this point in my career. I am extremely excited to get started and help another team be successful."

Richter was a two-time All-NSIC First Team selection for the Vikings who went on to earn NABC All-District Second Team honors his senior season. He finished his career in a Viking uniform in a big way, leading Augustana to its first National Championship earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the Elite Eight. Richter averaged 24.3 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 58 percent from the field, including 71 percent from 3-point range in the Elite Eight. He willed the Vikings to overcome a 10-point second-half deficit in the quarterfinal win over Tarleton State scoring a career-high 32 points, scoring 20 in the second half alone, while hitting 5 of 6 from behind the arc. Richter followed that with 15 points and nine rebounds against Western Oregon in the semifinals before finishing with 26 points and six rebounds in the National Championship game.

"As a staff, we are really happy Alex has decided to continue his basketball career," Augustana head coach Tom Billeter said. "Alex has continued to improve each and every year with us and I believe his performance at the Elite Eight was the perfect way for him to finish his career at Augustana. The Island Storm have a very good coach in Joe Salerno and he seemed very excited to have Alex join their team. We are extremely proud of him and know the Island Storm acquired a very good basketball player and an even better person."

Richter became the 32nd player in Augustana men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,465 points in 129 games played. He averaged 11.4 points and 3.5 rebounds during his career and was a 52.1 percent shooter from the field. Richter knocked down 194 3-pointers and shot 46 percent from behind the arc. He currently ranks 13th all-time in points scored, fourth in 3-point field goals made, second in 3-point field goal percentage and games played.

In 2015-16, Richter averaged 14.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the field. He led the team with 149 3-point field goals and shot 49.7 percent from behind the arc.

Augustana men's basketball won a school record 34 games in 2015-16, finishing the year 34-2 on its way to the program's first National Championship. The Vikings won their second straight NSIC Regular Season and Tournament Championships before winning the NCAA Central Region Tournament for the first time in school history.
