Today officially is the first day of fall as the Autumnal Equinox was at 3:02 PM, however it didn’t feel like fall out there today. High temperatures climbed into the low 90s in eastern South Dakota with heat indices reaching the triple digits! That heat and humidity has made things feel quite summer-like out there today and with that we are seeing some storms fire up across the area. Storms will continue through the evening and overnight and some of those could bring us some large hail & damaging wind gusts!
Overnight those storms will continue to push north into northeast South Dakota. Heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts area all possible. We will continue to deal with the much warmer weather to the east of I-29 overnight with low temps into the upper 60s and low 70s. Farther west it will be MUCH cooler with the mid to upper 40s and low 50s. We will see more of that humidity to the east which means it will stay quite sticky.
Saturday will be another rainy and stormy day for many of us. The clouds will keep things a bit cooler than where we were today. However, some spots will still be quite toasty with another chance at the 80s and humidity. The greatest chance for heat and some sunshine will be to the east I-29 and south of HWY-14. That is where we are expecting the 80s and some morning sunshine. Storms are much more likely for those into central South Dakota through the morning on Saturday, but by the afternoon the threat pushes east towards the warmer weather. Showers and storms look to pick up for the Sioux Falls area after 3pm and brings that chance for some more severe weather.
Storm chances linger with us through the weekend and into early next week. While we deal with the rain, temperatures will begin to get cooler, day by day. That will continue to be the case next week too! We’ll see the 50s, 60s, and 70s on Sunday, but by Monday we will likely just stay into the 50s and low 60s. Cooler weather will be the trend next week as fall finally settles in!
