After a quiet day across the area yesterday, the atmosphere is getting ready to bring in not only another round of summer like temperatures but also our next round of severe weather as well as a couple days of rain. That rainfall is expected to last throughout the weekend meaning by the time we go into the middle of next week, some of us could have accumulated a good amount of rainfall.
After an active Tuesday evening, the Sioux Empire saw a quiet day with plenty of sunshine on Wednesday. We had light winds which are now out of the south and are going to pick up in speed as we go throughout the day as another low pressure system develops and deepens going into the start of the weekend. Those southeasterly winds are going to top out somewhere between 10 and 15 miles per hour with gusts upwards 30 miles per hour at times as well. Those breezy winds are going to bring up warm temperatures not only today but also into the day on Friday, as well as help this low pressure system strengthen which is why we could see another round of severe weather on Friday.
As that low continues to deepen, we'll see the chance for rain begin later this afternoon across the northeast. That's where we find a marginal risk for wind with any thunderstorm that were to develop later this afternoon. However, more of the forecast area will see the chance for severe weather as we kick off the weekend as this low continues to move on out. Friday the area has a slight risk for severe weather and the timing for the thunderstorms to develop looks to be late in the afternoon/early evening due to hot temperatures that are expected to be found across the southeast. Wind and hail are the main threats with this next round of severe weather but an isolated tornado or two is possible.
High temperatures today are expected to climb into the 80s with some low 90s possible across lower portions of the MRV. Winds are going to be out of the southeast and windy, around 10 to 15 miles per hour with gusts upwards of 30 miles per hour at times.
We are going to continue to see the threat for rain throughout the weekend with areas between Brookings southwest towards Mitchell into Nebraska could pick up a couple inches of rain by the time we go into the start/middle of next week. Temperatures are going to be cooler over the weekend due to the cloud cover but will start to rebound into the middle of next week.
