SD Official Predicts Modest Turnout In Primary

Bookmark and Share

Secretary of State Jason Gant predicts that 25 percent to 30 percent of South Dakota's registered voters will cast ballots in Tuesday's primary election.

Gant says that's a slightly lower turnout than the average of 32 percent in the previous seven primary elections. The state's chief elections official says he expects a modest turnout because the Republican presidential nomination has already been decided.

But Gant says turnout might be better than expected because the Democratic congressional primary between Matt Varilek and Jeff Barth has heated up recently. He says people in some areas might be motivated to vote because of interest in legislative primaries.
