The Salvation Army in Sioux Falls plans to raise $500,000 during the holiday season to meet local needs.
Of that total, officials expect $350,000 to be brought in by bell ringers who collect change and small donations outside area shopping centers. They say the money raised goes toward programs run by the Salvation Army throughout the year.
Major Thomas Riggs in Sioux Falls says the goal is large, but the compassion shown by people in Sioux Falls is greater.
Some of the programs the Salvation Army provides in Sioux Falls include a warming site on cold nights, a monthly senior neighbor lunch, and Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets.
