South Dakota Sen. John Thune won re-election to the Senate Republican Conference Chairmanship Wednesday morning.
Thune was first named the third-highest ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate since January. His role as Senate Republican Conference Chairman is to spearhead messaging efforts for the conference.
In a statement, Thune says the country is at a critical point and he will continue to work to make sure important issues for both South Dakota and the country are at the forefront of policy discussions.
Thune is the highest ranking Republican senator from South Dakota since Sen. Chan Gurney of Yankton, who served as conference vice-chair, the No. 5 position, in the 1940s.
