Jacks-Coyotes anxious to resume rivalry

It's a rivalry renewed.

"It is going to be an exciting game. The stadium is going to be packed. We're going to have the intensity that we have with the North Dakota State game, that we used to have years ago with the rivalry," said SDSU Head Coach John Stiegelmeier.

And one that hasn't been played since 2003 bewteen South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.

"You ask any of my team mates about how excited I am about to be playing South Dakota State again that was always, I think you can get a team up maybe a couple times a year, but for sure you can get them up one time a year for the big one and we know that we can get our team up for this game. It is for the bragging rights of our state, it's for the bragging rights of I-90," said Coyotes Head Coach, Joe Glenn.

A rekindled in-state rivalry that started way back in 1889 but was interrupted in 2003 when the Jacks made the jump to division one football.

"Oh I mean a South Dakota boy raised all my life and of course that's the biggest game on my schedule this year is SDSU," said Will Powell, USD Receiver.

"From what I hear, I've never really been apart of it, but I hear it's like one of the biggest rivals ever," said SDSU Offensive Lineman, Andy Mink.

"Oh I think everbody around Coyote nation's ready for that game to happen. We're tired of being looked at as the little brother in South Dakota so we're more than ready to go up to Brookings and take care of the Jacks," said Coyote Running Back, Marcus Sims.  

Fans will be packed to the max in Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings on Saturday, looking for a thrilling game.

"My promise is it's going to be a cleaner football game and things are going to be done better and it's going to be a great rivalry," said Stiegelmeier.

"It's as good of a rivalry that I've ever been a part of no matter where I've coached," said Glenn.

"It's exciting to play them again and get that rivalry kind of rebuilt because it's going to help South Dakota get excited about football again," said Powell.

Hoping that fire will never go out again.
