The northeastern South Dakota town of Hecla is still trying to solve a mystery involving disappearing water.
The amount of water reaching residents is less than what the city is buying from a rural water system, but so far officials have been unable to find a leak. Finance Officer Gayle Lloyd says that the town lost 280,000 gallons of water last month.
The problem goes back several years but has been getting progressively worse. Between January and June, more than 4 million gallons of water was lost, costing the city of about 225 people $6,150.
Lloyd says with winter approaching the town likely will have to wait until spring to find the source of the leak.
