Gun Sales Increase After Election

Bookmark and Share

Steve Naatjes has owned Gary's Gun Shop in Sioux Falls for nearly 10 years now. He spends his days selling guns to customers and watching people practice their best shot.

However, since the election on November 6th he has a fear that some big changes are in store for gun owners.

"There's something coming. Just as to what extent I'm not sure," said Naatjes.

Ever since President Barack Obama hinted at a possible ban on assault weapons in the second presidential debate, Naatjes said people have been rushing through his doors.

"Overall sales are probably up 40 -50 percent. Handgun sales are probably 70 percent up from what it was and it's just now becoming a problem getting them," said Naatjes.

Gary's Gun Shop has sold more than 660 guns since the election. Some models like the Fallout 15 sold out within 24 hours.

"Common stuff like little 22's that you used to be able to get on the phone and buy a hundred of them now you might get one," said Naatjes.

The staff said customers have voiced their fears. They said they are afraid the ban would look similar to the one passed and signed by President Bill Clinton. Many are worried that it could affect their 2nd Amendment rights.

"There'd be huge increases on taxes on ammo, huge increases on guns that are available. An outright ban on manufactured some and or all semi automatic guns," said Naatjes.

While the sudden increase in sales is drastic, Naatjes said it's nothing compared to what he saw when the President was first elected in 2008.

"There was an increase in that time too," said Naatjes.

While no ban is currently set in place, Naatjes also worries what it could mean for his store.

"We wont be here. There won't be any question," said Naatjes.

The last ban on assault weapons was signed by Clinton in 1993, known as the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act. It expired in 2004.
